The age of majority is twenty-one full Gregorian years, and whoever reaches it has full capacity for legal transactions unless guardianship or curatorship over their property was ordered to continue beforehand (art. 96).
A minor's transactions vary by discernment:
- A non-discerning minor (under seven) has no capacity, and all his transactions are void (art. 86).
- A discerning minor (from the age of discernment until majority): transactions are valid if purely beneficial, void if purely harmful, and those between benefit and harm are voidable in his favor, unless ratified by the guardian or by himself after reaching majority (art. 87).
If the discerning minor reaches eighteen and his guardian sees he can manage his property, he may be authorized to manage all or part of it (art. 88); he then has capacity for management transactions within the authorization, but may not lease property for more than one year (art. 92). On reaching fifteen, a discerning minor has capacity to make an employment contract and dispose of his wages (art. 94).
