Felonies: The criminal case lapses after ten years from the day the felony occurred. The adjudged penalty lapses after twenty years from the date the judgment became final, except the death penalty, which lapses after thirty years (art. 4).
Misdemeanours: The criminal case lapses after five years from the day the offence occurred, and the adjudged penalty lapses after ten years from the date the judgment became final (art. 6).
Interruption: The limitation period for the case is interrupted by accusation, investigation, or trial procedures, or by inquiries taken against the accused or of which he was officially notified; in no case may interruption extend the period by more than half its length (art. 8).
Where there are multiple accused, interruption of the period for one of them interrupts it for the rest, even if no interrupting procedures were taken against them (art. 9).
