Must Kuwait Employers Pay Full Salary During Training?

Last updated 7/4/20260 viewsProvisional

Employers must pay full wages during training periods, but workers must serve an equivalent post-training period (up to 5 years) or risk repaying training costs.

Yes. Article 17 of Law No. 6 of 2010 explicitly requires employers to pay workers their full wages during any training period, whether the training takes place inside or outside the company's premises. This means attending an employer-mandated training course — even off-site — does not justify any deduction from your normal salary.

This protection applies to establishments subject to the vocational training provisions of the law. The law defines vocational training broadly under Article 15 as theoretical and practical programmes designed to develop workers' knowledge, skills, and productivity, or to prepare them for a specific profession.

There is, however, an important obligation on the worker's side. Under Article 18, if your employer has invested in your training or apprenticeship, you are required to continue working for that employer for a period equal to the training duration, up to a maximum of five years. If you leave before fulfilling this commitment, your employer is entitled to recover a proportionate share of the training costs. So before agreeing to an employer-sponsored training programme, make sure you understand the post-training service obligation and any repayment terms written into your contract.
